North Attleboro board approves advertising in schools

The school committee has approved a new policy allowing advertising on school grounds, setting the stage for potential fundraising efforts to improve the district’s fields.
The new policy, approved Monday, permits advertising of commercial products and services in school buildings with the school committee’s approval and on school grounds with the superintendent’s OK.

The previous policy, last amended in 2004, forbade all advertising on school grounds. School committee member James McKenna said he had reservations about the policy, but decided it was worth exploring after legal counsel told the committee that it could turn down advertisers deemed unfit.
“We’re trying to be open minded and not close the door on any possibilities,” McKenna said. “There’s skepticism there in my mind, but skepticism shouldn’t mean no.”
Despite the potential revenue from advertising in schools, the new policy has unnerved some residents.
