High-School Theaters Turn to Product Placement

School Theater Departments Earn Money With Products—Just Like Hollywood—in Performances.

CUYAHOGA FALLS, Ohio—People packed the high-school theater here one recent Friday night to see students put on the musical “Grease.” The songs were familiar, the 1950s-style leather jackets brought back memories of John Travolta. What was different was the pizza plugs.

In one scene the character Kenickie, played by 18-year-old senior Zeb Jones, carried a pizza box from Guys Pizza, a local place, though the script calls for a bag lunch. Later the restaurant owner’s father briefly appeared as a burger restaurant worker who happens to be wearing a large button with a Guys Pizza logo.
