Utah to collect $8.5 million over marketing of 'wonder' drug for diabetes patients
SALT LAKE CITY — Utah will receive $8.5 million from a drug maker accused of making misleading claims about a new drug for diabetes. GlaxoSmithKline admitted no wrongdoing in agreeing to settle a lawsuit filed by the Utah Attorney General’s Office.
The Utah Attorney General’s Office alleged GlaxoSmithKline marketed Avandia nationwide as a “wonder drug” offering a “significant advance” in diabetes treatment, despite evidence it increases the risk of heart attacks for certain users.Assistant Attorney General Robert Morton represented the state in the negotiations with help from private law firms.
