School ads debate reveals issues

Confusion among school board members over the ownership of Kraft Foods and Monster energy drinks illustrates the minefield school officials may have to navigate in determining who they can accept advertising dollars from, depending on how a revision of a district policy turns out.

In a public meeting late Tuesday, two Greenville County school board members erroneously attributed the ownership of the two companies to companies that manufacture or distribute alcohol or tobacco products.

Monster drinks isn’t owned by Budweiser, as Trustee Megan Hickerson said in the meeting. Budweiser of Greenville wouldn’t comment on the issue, and a spokeswoman for Monster Beverage Corp. said the company is publicly traded and not a subsidiary of any alcoholic beverage company.
