Merrill School District rejects Skyward's website proposal

Merrill Area Public Schools is declining a new source of revenue that would have helped balance its books by allowing advertising on the district’s website.

The Merrill School Board rejected a proposal from Skyward Inc., a Stevens Point-based educational software firm, that would have allowed local businesses to place advertisements on the opening page of the Family Access area of the district’s website. Parents and students use the site to get a variety of information, such as student attendance, schedules and grades, and to pay for school meals.

Board members had “no interest, none whatsoever,” in the proposal when they discussed it at a Finance Committee meeting, said Brian Dasher, the Merrill school district’s director of finance.

“Their biggest concern was that the advertising would be completely in the hands of the company, and not in the hands of the district,” Dasher said.
