Ignoring commercials won't make them go away, or even keep them from being seen
By Joey Kennedy
We are sure the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood means well.
It would, after all, be great if we could shield our children from the influence of commercial advertising. It would be magical if we could force them to close their eyes and make all the claims and aims of the advertising age go away.
Magical, all right.
Because the very idea is so absurd in a world where we all are bombarded with deals and bargains and commercial opinions that believing we can block advertising to children is magical thinking.
