Not So Fast: Transportation Bill Amendment Would Restrict MBTA’s Ability to Sell Station Naming Righ
By Steve Annear
Elected officials are trying to keep the T from completely derailing the city’s rich history.
Several Senators slipped an amendment into a massive transportation bill working its way through the State House in an effort to sustain some of Boston’s integrity.
Sen. Sonia Chang-Diaz said she and her colleagues felt they had to “draw the line” when it came to sponsors potentially being able to pay money to put their monikers in front of MBTA station names in order for the transportation agency to rake in extra non-fare revenue.
“We believe it’s important in public spaces to retain a sense of place and in many cases a sense of history. Not everything is for sale,” she said.
