Taxpayers foot bill for TV marketing
By Jim Metrock
Disney is the world’s largest media company. It made more than $4 billion in profits last year. So why did you, Mr. and Mrs. Alabama Taxpayer, subsidize the marketing and promotion of Disney movies and TV shows in Alabama classrooms this past school year?
In more than 300 Alabama middle and high schools, students watched movie trailers for the latest releases from Disney, Warner Brothers, Dreamworks, and other Hollywood movie studios.
This madness has been happening for years because schools have signed a contract with a New York youth marketing firm called Channel One. (Interestingly, the firm’s home state bans Channel One from all its public schools.)
