School board supports hearing for in-school ads

Brevard School Board members are considering allowing advertising in school cafeterias, hallways and libraries in an effort to create a revenue stream to help offset state funding shortfalls.

On Tuesday, board members voted 4-1 to hold a public hearing June 12 on the potential policy. Karen Henderson opposed,

“(It would) prepare ourselves to be able to fund programs — extracurriculars, sports, things of that nature — as funding gets tougher and tougher,” School Board Member Andy Ziegler said. “As things change, we can look at reeling it back. ”

The policy would limit advertisements in some areas, such as core-subject classrooms and school buses. But some said it wasn’t limiting enough. Henderson expressed concern that the revenue potential was not worth allowing advertising inside of schools. She said she could support advertising outside of buildings.
