Driven to drink? Alcohol ads on buses make sense in sobering times

On the same day that a Port Authority board committee was forced by lack of revenue to move toward a July fare increase and a brutal 35 percent cut in service, a new advertising policy was approved that would allow liquor advertising on buses and trolleys.

This new source of revenue could raise an eyebrow or two, but we prefer to raise a glass and toast a sensible move. While the prospect of liquor advertising is not going to save the system, every bit of revenue helps at this desperate stage. At present, advertising brings in just $1 million out of the $70 million operating budget.
