Protesters briefly disrupt U of A ceremony awarding honorary degree to Nestle exec

More than a dozen demonstrators clapped and called out “Shame! Shame! Shame on the U of A,” as Nestle executive Peter Brabeck-Letmathe stood Thursday to receive an honorary degree at the University of Alberta.

In a brief protest rarely seen at what is usually a solemn ceremony, critics of the award rose from their seats in the Timms Centre as Brabeck-Letmathe was being introduced and called out as he began to speak about the award.

That prompted university chancellor Linda Hughes to call for decorum.

“Please respect university traditions and respect the people on stage,” Hughes told the protesters.
