John Kerry, Edward Markey praise FTC privacy report that backs their legislative initiatives

Senator John F. Kerry and Congressman Edward J. Markey, longtime advocates of online privacy protection, praised a Federal Trade Commission report released Monday that endorsed many of the legislative safeguards they have proposed.

The FTC report, the final version of a preliminary set of findings published 15 months ago, called on Congress “to consider enacting baseline privacy legislation.”

“The commission is prepared to work with Congress and other stakeholders to craft such legislation,” the 73-page report said. “At the same time, the commission urges industry to accelerate the pace of self-regulation.”
