Palm Beach County schools may sell ads for revenue

Advertising could be displayed on Palm Beach County public school websites, inside buses and across campuses starting next year as part of a strategy to get cash flowing into depleted budgets, according to a study released on Friday.

A citizens committee asked officials to develop by next month a recommendation for a school advertising program. It’s in anticipation of a $52 million operating budget shortfall for the 2012-13 school year.

“It’s a good idea,” said committee member Brian Crowley, whose group advises the School Board. “The classroom is no longer that safe place where you don’t see advertising. We have to be creative in finding ways to fill that shortfall.”
