Washoe schools vote to seek proposals for advertising revenue

Washoe County Schools have set aside a proposal to use school buses as mobile billboards for additional revenue and on 6-1 vote by trustees on Tuesday directed staff to seek proposals to provide advertising services through the district website and non-transportation vehicles.

Support for advertising on school buses waned primarily over concerns that such advertising could cause traffic problems around buses carrying children and also over the image of the school district it could project.

Trustee Barbara Clark, who voted no on the current idea because of concern over the website, renewed her objections over the image advertising on the website might represent.

“It’s a demonstration of what we put out to the community and to the world of what we value,” Clark said. “I don’t favor advertising, because quite frankly it’s the public’s responsibility to support education.”
