AMA votes to discourage doctored ads aimed at kids
The nation’s largest doctors’ group has taken action aiming to discourage altered ads that promote unrealistic body images. The American Medical Association is particularly concerned about ads directed at kids.
The AMA’s Dr. Barbara McAneny (MAK’-uh-NEN’-ee) notes that in one highly publicized ad, a model’s downsized waist looked smaller than her head. She says such ads make kids want unattainable body types.
The AMA on Tuesday voted to encourage advertising associations to work on developing guidelines that would discourage those practices.
The group also voted to advocate for health insurance coverage for nutrition counseling for pregnant women and new mothers. The idea is to make it easier for them to reach and maintain a healthy weight.
The votes took place shortly before the AMA concluded its annual policy-setting meeting in Chicago.
