Should cities sell ads to fund public services?

Baltimore City Councilor William Welch’s proposal to sell ad space on that city’s fire trucks was recently approved by the council. He argues it’s a way to preserve a crucial public service. Elizabeth Ben-Ishai from Public Citizen says public space is meant to reflect the values of our society, not get co-opted by the private sector.

More and more cities are selling ad space or sponsorship to help fund public services. But what crosses the line when it comes to commercializing public space? Tell us what you think.
