Growth of LED billboards puts Miami, county at odds

The cash-starved city of Miami, which last year entered into money-making agreements with Clear Channel to erect massive LED billboards along Interstate 95 in apparent violation of county law, is poised to allow the giant electronic advertising signs on three big public buildings, including the historic Gusman theater downtown and the Miami Childrenís Museum on Watson Island.

But Miamiís sudden love affair with outdoor advertising doesnít stop there. And critics say the cityís embrace of the ad industry, coupled with ordinances now under consideration at Miami-Dade County, could lead to a proliferation of electronic billboards and other types of outdoor ads across the county, undoing decades of regulations designed to restrict the size, number and location of signs once widely regarded as visual pollution.
