Clinton School Food Deal Good for Junk Food Company PR, Not Kids

Following is the statement of Gary Ruskin, executive director of Commercial Alert, on today’s agreement between former President Clinton and food manufacturers about school food.

“The Clinton deal is a sham and a public relations stunt.  It is entirely voluntary and not enforceable.  The industry can back away from the deal tomorrow.”

“Voluntary guidelines are not enough to protect our children from greedy junk food companies.  Our children deserve laws, not promises that aren’t worth the paper they are printed on.”

“Who is Bill Clinton kidding?  Baked potato chips and sweetened bars are not substitutes for apples and carrots, beans and greens.”

“Has the Clinton Foundation received any contributions from any of the companies that are a party to this agreement?  How about the American Heart Association?”

Commercial Alert’s campaign to end the childhood obesity epidemic is in its fourth year.  Our goal is to end the marketing and sale of junk food and soft drinks to children in schools.

Commercial Alert’s mission is to keep the commercial culture within its proper sphere, and to prevent it from exploiting children and subverting the higher values of family, community, environmental integrity and democracy. For more information, see our website at:
