HUNNEMAN: Naming rights are for sale in Temecula

As reported in our fine newspaper recently, Temecula officials are considering a proposal to allow sponsors to purchase the naming rights to city owned facilities, parks and events such as parades, rod runs, er, I mean rod run, and concerts.

The idea is to raise money to support those places and things – that ice skating rink doesn’t grow on trees, you know – because Redevelopment Agency funds once used to carry that load are no longer available. A city finance department memorandum lists possible events and places that could be sponsored such as the annual Bluegrass and Street Painting Festivals, Western Days and Hot Summer Nights. Some facilities and places are out of bounds for sponsorship, officials said, and that makes sense. For instance “Temecula City Hall sponsored by Rancon Real Estate” is simply asking for trouble.
